Tecniques on Holding a discussion

How to do a DQ in ramadan:

Speech delivery:

  1. prepare lec
  2. practice verbal speaking
  3. non-verbal skills
  4. how to question
  5. how to summarize
  6. audio-visual skills

  Ineffective speech :

  • 100%  the speaker speaks in an ineffective speech
  • One way speech; no interaction with the audience
  • Ustaad wont ask any questions; big or small;
  • Students are totally dependent on the Ustaad; speaker doesnt tickle their minds.
  • No activities are planned; no activity sheet; no diff. scenerios to think about and ponder.
  • No audio-visual aids are used.
  • too much note writing and to the point notes.
  • discussion not done

When should the discussion be done:

When the students are fresh

or After one hour of lecture

After two hr, students need a break

Make it light and interesting if no time left;

Refrain from using difficult language; simple language

What are the main components of a holding a discussion:

  1. Intro to the lec.; Intro. to para;  Intro to discussion after the lecture:focus on main points of Amal
  2. During discussion : use Key terms the ustazah used or the theme of the para
  3. Give examples from real life for the students to relate; example for Taqwa: – hidden cameras/cops for speeding
  4. Use analogies; opposites; comparisions

Effective Intro:

  • Show the main objectives of the lec in 3-4 sentences
  • ask rhetorical questions: questions in which the answers can be found; in Quran Allah swt asks:” dont you see who made the skies..?”
  • Before starting the discussion, we can ask a couple of questions to review the theme of the entire lec; like ” what was the theme of todays lec?” or the recurrent theme or what did you get out of it?
  • Share a famous Hadith or a Quote at the beginning; it should be related to the lec/topic or a phrase that needs defining and we can say today we will get the answer to this defination
  • Recap the previous para/juz in a line or two
  • Case -solving if related with the topic: show the problems we face today and let them know that we will find the answer in this lection: picque their curiosity
  • motivate them to share , to type
  • Share a personal experience
  • Make notes for the discussion before the class by listening to the lecture:gives time to think
  • to hold a discussion without notes :wastes time, lose main points, raises nervousness and anxiety

What if we have our notes ready:

  1. Kam waqt main zayeda cheeze sikha sakte hai
  2. will be on the topic
  3. wont lose the message
  4. Main points will be covered
  5. even if the time is up , we will relay our message/points
  6. we are relaxed
  7. more sadaqah jaria

How and where to write our notes:

  1. write on pages
  2. index cards
  3. presentation
  4. Quran
  5. notebook

use hihglightters:

can even highlight the points in importance order? like red highlighter extremely imp to cover and green extra helpful things?

Imanwala asks what he can do for others and not what others can do for him.

Ramadan : Month of Qiyam ul Layl

Allah swt has creted us for His worship

Ramadan has lot of variety in worship

Most important is Farz ibadaat

DOnt tire yourself in day time

Night prayes: Hadith: [bukhari]: whoever stays up in the night in salat with eimaan and seeking reward on DOJ, then Allah swt erases all his previoua sins.
